Education - We have speakers at almost every meeting. The speakers in the past have been Nephrologists, Transplant Surgeons, Dietitians, Dialysis Technicians, Social Workers, etc. We have had a speaker from Pres St. Lukes that is an expert in her field of diabetes. We have had a speaker from ESRD. This is where the education lies. We also have speakers and demonstrations on new machines in the field such as the NX Stage home hemo machine and the Aksys home hemo machine. We talk about new things that are happening in the Chronic Kidney Disease world.
Responsibility - We have learned that the only true way to feel better is to take responsibility for your own self. Going to All of your treatments, taking your meds, watching your diet, etc. It sure as heck won’t cure your kidney disease, but it has made us all feel better both physically and mentally.
Motivation - This is gotten from the people you meet at the meetings. We don’t have a “gripe session”. We talk to each other about how we felt before we got together with others in the “same boat” as ourselves and how this has helped us through each others experiences to cope with different issues that someone else was always “too busy” to answer our questions.
We have meetings on the last Sunday of every other month. They are held at Porter Hospital from 1:00PM to 3:00PM. Some meetings have a large turnout, some meetings have a small turnout. The group is for anyone diagnosed with kidney disease and their families. We have snacks and interact with each other. There are no dues.
The next meeting is June 27th at 1:00
We just want you to help yourself.
